The past two years I've offered up a holiday gift guide of sorts around this time of year (you can find the 2008 Holiday Gift Guide here and the 2007 Few of My Favorite Things list here) . It's basically a compilation of my favorite things of the year. I'm afraid I'm a bit late with gift suggestions this year, but I always say "better late than never." Without further ado, here is the 2009 Holiday Gift Idea list. Happy giving to yourself and others!
- Herbs and Super Foods — My health is a priority, so I often turn to herbs to maintain my health and my energy. Two of my very favorite sources for herbs and super foods are Mountain Rose Herbs and Dragon Herbs. Herbs for smoothies and teas, teas, elixirs, tonics, and super foods are just a sampling of what you'll find at these two sites. The products are high quality and the prices are reasonable.
- Music and Dance — Music can set a mood, inspire movement, add a bounce to your step and enhance the quality of your day. My iPod is filled with all types of music and some of my favorite comes from Nia. The world music offered by Nia encompasses everything from tribal beats to jazz to sexy grooves to electronic. The CDs are priced right (re: LOW) and there's a huge selection to choose from (I have just about all of the CDs and there aren't any bad ones in the bunch). Click here to browse the whole collection (you can also listen to samples). One of my favorite things to do is cue up a tune of one of these CDs and dance free form. When I want something a little more structured, I turn to one of my favorite Dance DVDs, Soul Sweat. This lively DVD offers a brief 30-minute dance workout and a longer 45-minute one. The music is fantastic — it begs your body to move. It's a perfect way to move, get your heart rate up and have fun.
- Bags — I have a penchant for bags, which is interesting since I usually travel light (wallet and cell phone only). My favorite source for functional, funky, sturdy, and adorable bags is Sherpani. I first discovered their bags when I was visiting Vermont 4-5 years ago. I bought the Zoe small shoulder wallet, which I still use today (and I constantly get compliments on it). Over the years, Sherpani has changed colors and designs (although they still offer the Zoe wallet as well as a few funky variations of it) and added a Naturals Collection, which feature bags made from earth-friendly materials (check out the Zenia shoulder wallet, which is the Zoe equivalent). I now have 4 Sherpani bags and I love each and every one of them. If you're looking for something a little more fancy, I highly recommend the gorgeous bags over at The Crafty Devils. The bags are simply designed (but beautiful) and hand made. I especially adore the hands-free clutch. And the customer service rocks!
- Raw Goodness — One of my favorite online destinations for raw foods is One Lucky Duck. It's healthy snacking at its best! And One Lucky Duck doesn't stop at yummies — they also offer a great selection of supplements, beauty products, raw food books, environmentally-friendly home goods, and a small selection of Duck-centric clothes. It's a treasure-trove of healthy goodness!
- Do-Gooding — Got someone on your list who is hard to buy for? Why not donate to a charity in their name? That's bound to make everyone feel good — the giver and the givee. There are so many worthy and wonderful organizations out there. Here are a few of my favorites: Orangutan Outreach, Heifer International, Farm Sanctuary, and Kiva.
- Adornment — Energy Muse has line of beautiful necklaces and bracelets for the special woman in your life. The Goddess Collection celebrates the power of woman with beautiful pieces that would delight any recipient. I own the Aphrodite necklace, and I feel like a beautiful goddess every time I wear it. If you're looking for something unusual and inexpensive, Energy Muse also just released a new line of scented (aromatherapy, anyone?) bracelets. The Wearable Scents collection features a variety of scents for $25 each.
- Handcrafted Goodness — If you're looking for original gifts that have been handmade by uber-talented people, I can't recommend Etsy highly enough. I'm a huge fan of the site and I've bought plenty of gorgeous items for myself and my friends. I love supporting talented craftspeople and I love the high quality for low prices. Here are a few of my favorite Etsy sellers/shops: Spa Goddess, IM Creations, Indy Pendants, Compassion Malas, Raynas Place, The Healing Earth, Joy White, Gaia Conceptions, KDottie, Motley Mutton, Cypress Sun. This artist used to have an Etsy shop, but graduated to her own Web site, so I wanted to include her as well — Kelly Rae Roberts.
- School of Fun — Daily Om, which started out with a daily inspirational message in your inbox, has expanded to offer online courses. The course are inexpensive and offer a variety of topics (all related to self-growth). It's a perfect last-minute gift and/or gift for yourself.
- Custom Blended Essences — Feel Good Energy Shift offers a variety of auric sprays that are sure to delight any recipient. Choose from chakra sprays and auric sprays with formulas for everything from positive thinking to harmony to comfort to uplift. You can also order custom blend of flower and vibrational essences created specifically for you or someone you love.
- Yoga Clothes — Adidas isn't only for sports-minded guys any longer. They now offer an awesome line of clothes for women. The styles are feminine and the colors are original and beautiful. Adidas has also teamed up with yogi Rainbeau Mars to offer a line of feminine yet practical yoga clothes. You can see more — as well as workout videos — here. I bought my new Adidas outfit to SC and I got plenty of compliments at the local yoga studio. Click here to browse the Adidas line for women. And if you're looking for yoga clothes without the exorbitant yoga price tag, I recommend Tottiebean.com. The company is a family-oriented one that produces clothes for kids and their moms. I like the family values feel to the site and their super soft yoga pants are to die for (and they retail for under $40!).
- Get Juiced — If you're looking for a higher-end gift for the health-conscious, I recommend a juicer/high speed blender. I love my BlendTec and I use it daily. The Vita-Mix was in the running when I was choosing a model and I highly recommend it as well. If you're looking for something more reasonably priced, I recommend The Bullet Express and the L'Equip Juicer.
- The Gift of Yoga — If you've got someone on your list who wants to take a yoga class but doesn't live near a yoga studio or doesn't have the time to commute back and forth, I suggest live online yoga classes from HypnoYogaOnline. Classes are offered Monday thru Friday and are only $10/class. If you've got an iPod/iPhone-addicted person on your list, Power Up Fun Media offers an iPod app that puts 6 minutes of yoga in your pocket. The yoga routine is synchronized to music, so your movements are supported by the music. The practice is simple — Sun Salutations — and can be repeated so practitioners can build strength. Click here for a preview.
- Books — My bookcases are overflowing with books and I love to give favorite books as gifts so my friends can share in the joy. Here are some of my recent favorite reads: W.O.M.A.N: A New Definition, Yoga for Pain Relief: Simple Practices to Calm Your Mind & Heal Chronic Pain, Life's Golden Ticket, Eyes Wide Open: Cultivating Discernment on the Spiritual Path, Finding the Deep River Within: A Woman's Guide to Recovering Balance and Meaning in Everyday Life, Why I Wake Early: New Poems (Mary Oliver), River Flow: New and Selected Poems 1984-2007 (David Whyte).
- Bargains — Amanzi Tea is offering 20% off all gift sets for online orders until Dec. 31. Use code holiday_09 at checkout. Fertile Goddess is offering 50% off everything in their online store from now and Dec. 31. Pick up yoga pants for a mere $33. Whew — that's the list for this year. May you find joy in both giving and receiving this year (and always)!
Namaste!
